Does The Ascent have cross-play and cross-platform co-op?

The Ascent has just released, bringing top-down, twin-stick action to players on Xbox and PC. It’s a game clearly meant for cooperative play, requiring teamwork to survive the future dystopia. But can players on other platforms brave the cybernetic unknown together? Does The Ascent support cross-platform play?

Does The Ascent have cross-platform co-op?

In addition to couch co-op and online multiplayer, The Ascent also supports cross-play between the the Xbox Series X|S and PC. However, there’s no true cross-platform play, as the game isn’t available on other platforms like the PlayStation 5.

The news is good: Anyone who buys The Ascent will be able to enjoy online co-op with friends. Given that the game is available on Xbox Game Pass, there’s likely to be loads of players jumping into the action. Up to four players can join a single session through online matchmaking.

There’s also the option to play local couch co-op. Again, parties of up to four players are supported. The only catch is that there’s no option to split parties between both local and online. If you’ve got friends at your house ready to play, you won’t be able to join others through internet matchmaking. Still, it is possible to enjoy co-op with up to three others without all of your friends having to buy the game.

All considered, the multiplayer options are about as expected. The Ascent is based around an old-school isometric style, perfect for top-down action fans or those who honor classic gaming traditions. With a cyberpunk-inspired theme, gritty storytelling, and a swathe of upgrades and combat options, there should be enough to keep a group of friends occupied for quite a while.

The Ascent does have local and online co-op, and cross-play is supported between Xbox Series X|S and PC. Cross-platform play only works between those two platforms, since the game isn’t available for PlayStation 5 or the Nintendo Switch.
