Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Save – How Manual Saves and Autosaves Work

Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally in peoples’ hands, and one vital thing to know about it is how to save your game. Players who have played a Rockstar game before will have an idea of how this works, but newcomers to the franchise will need to know how to do it. So, here’s our guide on how to save your game in RDR2.

How Autosave Works in Red Dead Redemption 2

Thankfully, Rockstar has employed an autosave feature – akin to those found in other big titles these days – that saves your game after everything that happens. There’s no worry about losing your progress in that respect then.

Additionally, when you’re in the midst of a main mission in the campaign, there are checkpoints scattered throughout. This means that, if you do die mid-mission, you’ll revert back to the last checkpoint that you crossed, and you can continue your adventure from there.

There are a few major autosave points in Red Dead Redemption 2:

  • Before and after a main mission.
  • When you sleep.
  • When you bathe.
  • When you either buy or sell an item.

The game keeps track of everything you do, so you’ll be hard-pressed to lose a single bit of progress.

How to Manually Save in Red Dead Redemption 2

Some players will want to be able to manually save their game at points too. Rockstar allows you to do this as well, and it doesn’t take many steps to complete a manual save.

To do this, bring up the menu and click on “Story.” From there, you can select “save game” in the sub-menu. Be aware, however, that you may manually save over the autosave you have in place. If you want to make a second file as your manual save, so you can keep hold of your autosave as well, just scroll down to the next available save slot and save there.
